Precision Façade Assessment at Shaw Centre

Project Location: Shaw Centre, Orchard Road, Singapore

At ML Façade Inspection, we recently executed a comprehensive Periodic Façade Inspection (PFI) for the iconic Shaw Centre, a prominent high-rise in the heart of Orchard Road. This active commercial and retail hub, surrounded by residences, presented unique urban challenges. Leveraging our advanced drone capabilities, we delivered a precise, efficient, and BCA-endorsed assessment, underscoring our commitment to safety, expertise, and innovative solutions for this landmark property.

Mastering High-Rise Inspection Challenges at Shaw Centre Orchard

  1. Complex Airspace Permitting & Authorization
    • The Challenge:

Inspecting a multi-storey building like Shaw Centre required CAAS permits for flights up to 400 feet AMSL in a dense urban core, necessitating stringent aviation regulation adherence and airspace authorizations.

    • Our Solution:

Our deep expertise secured necessary CAAS permits, crucially including authorization from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) for vital airspace clearance. Our proven compliance ensured streamlined approvals.

  2. Minimizing Disruption & Managing Public Perception in a Mixed-Use Area
    • The Challenge:

Inspecting an active commercial and residential hub like Shaw Centre demanded meticulous planning to avoid disrupting tenants, shoppers, and residents. A particular challenge involved a public call to the police by concerned citizens who, unfamiliar with drone operations.

    • Our Solution:

We implemented strategic, off-peak scheduling, established clear exclusion zones, and maintained strong communication with management. Critically, our trained personnel promptly clarified our work to the police, ensuring seamless operations and managing public safety concerns in real-time.

  3. Assessing Diverse Façade Systems, Including Green Walls with AI Precision
    • The Challenge:

Shaw Centre features a wide array of multi-era façade systems—from traditional cladding and granite tiles to glass curtain walls and notable green walls—each requiring detailed assessment.

    • Our Solution:

Our multi-disciplinary façade inspectors and drone pilots provided unique expertise. Drones captured broad visual data, while specialized knowledge ensured precise defect identification across all façade materials, including the health and integrity of vertical greenery.

An interesting technical point during this project was that our AI initially flagged sections of the green wall as potential defects of plant growth on walls. Our team then had to meticulously analyze these detections and reprogram the AI to accurately differentiate between healthy green wall elements and actual façade defects, demonstrating our commitment to precise AI interpretation and data refinement. High-resolution aerial data was meticulously cross-referenced with architectural plans and historical information to verify façade details and pinpoint anomalies.

  4. Mitigating Environmental & Signal Interference with Advanced Stability
    • The Challenge:

Flying drones in Shaw Centre’s constricted urban environment meant narrow gaps, potential magnetic interference from dense signals, and high-altitude winds risking drone stability and data quality.

    • Our Solution:

We deployed robust DJI Matrice 300 RTK drones. Weighing above 7kg, these industry-leading drones are inherently very stable, allowing them to hold steady even in challenging wind conditions. This superior stability, coupled with advanced automatic flying systems and precise control, is crucial for capturing clear and reliable visual data (steady pictures). We effectively navigate narrow spaces, aided by fine-tuned obstacle sensors and crucial contingency plans like emergency landing protocols, further ensuring operational integrity.

  5. Optimizing Data Capture & Safety with Dual Pilot Operations
    • The Challenge:

A single pilot faced challenges simultaneously managing flight safety (eyes on drone) and intricate data capture (eyes on screen) for Shaw Centre’s vast façade in a busy high-rise setting.

    • Our Solution:

Our advanced dual remote controller system allowed two certified pilots to collaborate. One focused on precise flight control and safety, leveraging the drone’s inherent stability, while the other managed meticulous camera operation and data capture. This ensured comprehensive inspection coverage and maximum operational safety.

The successful drone inspection of Shaw Centre stands as a powerful testament to ML Façade Inspection’s specialized expertise in navigating the unique complexities of high-rise PFI in active commercial and mixed-use urban environments. Our combination of certified personnel, cutting-edge drone technology, and meticulous planning delivers accurate, efficient, and safe façade assessments, significantly contributing to Singapore’s urban integrity and safety.
